What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder, commonly known as autism, is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and experiences the world around them. Because it’s a spectrum, autism looks different for everyone, some people may need a lot of support in daily life, while others may need less. People with autism may experience challenges in social communication and interaction, along with restricted, repetitive, and inflexible patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. This can include things like a strong need for routine, deep focus on specific topics, or repetitive movements or speech. While these traits can sometimes create barriers, they also come with incredible strengthssuch as intense focus, unique problem-solving skills, and a different perspective that enriches our world. At The Autism Hero Project, we believe that understanding leads to acceptance, and acceptance opens the door to inclusion and empowerment for every person on the spectrum.

ABOUT The Autism Hero Project (AHP)

OUR VISION

Prepare kids with autism for the world and prepare the world for them.

OUR Mission

The Autism Hero Project is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that exists to break down barriers that prevent autistic individuals from reaching their full potential. We believe in a world where acceptance isn't just an idea—it's a practice, woven into schools, workplaces, and communities. We champion autism inclusion through direct action and systemic change. Our work focuses on four key pillars: Access to Care: We sponsor medical insurance for autistic children to ensure they can receive essential therapies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that support their growth and independence. Empowering Futures: We offer education scholarships to autistic teens and adults, helping them develop skills, pursue meaningful employment, and build empowered lives. Training First Responders: We provide autism and crisis training to first responders to create safer, more informed interactions and improve public safety for the autism community. Building Inclusive Communities: From sensory-friendly events to advocacy campaigns, we create spaces and experiences where autistic individuals and their families feel seen, supported, and celebrated. At AHP, we don’t just advocate for change—we create it. Together, we are building a future where neurodiversity is recognized as a strength, and every autistic person is supported, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive.

9th Annual Include Me Gala: Hope in Action

Early bird.png

💙 What if one night could help change a child's future?

What if the ticket you purchased helped a family access therapy they couldn't afford?

What if your seat at a gala became a bridge to inclusion, hope, and opportunity for someone on the autism spectrum?

Every year, families come to The Autism Hero Project carrying challenges most people never see. They are navigating therapy costs, educational barriers, employment struggles, and a world that still has work to do when it comes to understanding autism.

And every year, because of supporters like YOU, hope shows up.

On September 19, we'll gather for our 9th Annual Include Me Gala. Not just to celebrate, but to create impact.

Early Bird Pricing ends soon. ✨ Ticket prices increase after the Early Bird deadline. Don't wait. Reserve your seat today and be part of something bigger than yourself.

Because inclusion doesn't happen by accident.
It happens when people choose to show up.

Calling All First Responders!

Attention Chicagoland Law Enforcement & First Responders

With the passage of SB3201 requiring autism training, it is more important than ever to equip your department with the tools to safely navigate every community interaction.

The Schaumburg Police Department is hosting Bridging the Gap: Autism-Informed Training. This critical session provides actionable strategies to ensure safe, effective communication and prevent standard calls from escalating into preventable tragedies.

Choose Your Session:

Session 1: Wednesday, July 8th, 2026
