SENSORY KITs

Sensory Kits are essential tools that help first responders create calmer, safer interactions with individuals on the autism spectrum and those with sensory sensitivities. Each kit includes simple, evidence-informed items designed to reduce anxiety, promote communication, and support de-escalation during emergencies or crisis situations.
By equipping officers, firefighters, EMTs and business organizations with Sensory Kits, departments demonstrate a commitment to empathy, inclusion, and community trust, ensuring that every encounter is handled with understanding and dignity.

The Blue Envelope Program: From Community Initiative to State Law
The Autism Hero Project is proud to have spearheaded the effort to bring the Blue Envelope Program to Illinois, helping create safer and more informed interactions between law enforcement officers and individuals with autism and other communication differences during traffic stops and emergency situations.
What began as a grassroots initiative focused on education, safety, and inclusion has now led to meaningful legislative change. Through advocacy, collaboration, and community partnerships, The Autism Hero Project worked alongside lawmakers, law enforcement agencies, self-advocates, families, and stakeholders to advance legislation that will make the Blue Envelope Program a mandated program under Illinois law.
The Blue Envelope Program provides drivers with a blue envelope that contains their driver's license, vehicle registration, insurance information, and communication guidance. The envelope serves as a visual cue to law enforcement officers that the driver may have autism or another communication-related disability, helping to reduce anxiety, improve communication, and promote safer interactions for everyone involved.
This legislative milestone represents more than a policy change. It is a step toward creating a world where individuals with autism are better understood, supported, and protected.
As an organization committed to "Preparing Kids with Autism for the World and Preparing the World for Them," The Autism Hero Project remains dedicated to advancing initiatives that foster inclusion, safety, independence, and opportunity for the autism community.
Together, we are proving that awareness is important, acceptance is necessary, and action creates lasting change.
We have successfully created and customized over 80 Police Agencies Blue Envelope Programs and counting!
